Like most countries in the tropics, Costa Rica has two seasons - the wet season and the dry season. Costa Rica’s dry season begins from December to the month of April while the rainy season goes from the month of May to the month of November. Since this country is very diverse and carries microclimates, the weather here is extra unpredictable. So, the question is, how is Costa Rica in July? Well, before we get into that, let’s learn a little more about the weather in the country on the whole.

Because of how close it is to the equator you can expect how diverse Costa Rica’s weather is and so its people don’t experience winter. Due to this, the span of the day stays the same all year round – usually, the sun goes up at around 5 in the morning and goes down at 6 in the evening with about 12 hours of sunshine every day. So, if you like warm weather and not really into the idea of skiing in the winter, then this place is one of the best places to be.

The reason as to why this country’s weather is so varied is due to the difference in elevation. For example, the area of Guancaste is located on the lowlands and experiences a dry climate, while Montverde is located in the highlands, and so is foggy and misty all year round. If you are looking for a place with the best weather, then you must check out Central Valley where you’ll find San Jose – here you will be able to enjoy an average temperature of 72ºF with a chilly breeze coming from the ocean. It is, of course, warmer at sea level – about 79ºF and the days are normally warm and humid in the evening.

Costa Rica is definitely an amazing place to visit and even a place to live. Generally, the climate is tropical and the weather is quite warm at any time of the year with a great amount of sunshine in most parts of the country.

Weather in Costa Rica in July

Bright sunshine in the mornings heating up the ocean. Rainforest canopy bringing fresh air near the surface with water and making it go up. As the moisture-loaded air climbs up, it swells and cools pouring out droplets that create the clouds and eventually, produces rain.

This is the pattern that dominates the wet season of Costa Rica, and it goes from the month of May to the month of November and July is not an exception. Still, it is an amazing time to visit the country. Here, you can expect steamy sunny mornings, which is perfect for enjoying the beach and when the afternoon and evening comes, rain comes to cool it off, which is ideal for an outdoor snack.

Even though this month is caught in the middle of the rainy season, the country usually experiences a short mid-year semi-dry season in the month of July and the start of August. Rainfall lowers down suggestively for 3 or 4 weeks particularly in the northern part of the Pacific.

Out of all the rainy months, July is normally a little drier compared to the rest of the rainy season, but sometimes, it gets very wet. The Caribbean region is firmly in the rainy season and it is so common to experience heavy rain.

The lowlands and beaches experience high temperatures in the low 90s and low temperatures in the higher 70s or low 80s. it’s possible to experience mid-90s for 1 to 2 weeks when you are at low elevated areas and particularly on the Nicoya coast throughout the month of July.

About 3000 feet higher around the Central Valley and San José, you can expect for the temperature to play between 5 and 10 degrees cooler. And if you go at higher elevated areas, the temperature can be about 20 or even 30 degrees lower. And of course, the higher the place gets, the lower the temperature becomes, especially at night, so if you are looking for a colder Costa Rican getaway, then plan your trip to the mountain areas.

Making Reservations

In the past few years, the month of July has become more and more popular among tourists and now can be considered as rivals to the other popular months – January, March, and December.

We would recommend advanced reservations and to visit Nicoya, Guanacaste, as well as the central part of the country as they are the perfect destinations for volcanoes and beaches, although if you arrive early time of the day, you can still get hotels as walk-ins, but mostly on the hotels that are not too popular.

As the “low season” discounts becoming more and more of a thing for July, this month has become a popular time to visit for those who are on a budget. Airfare is one of the most important things to consider when traveling anywhere, and this month offers affordable airfare.
