1. The Castle to End All Castles: Neuschwanstein

This one has got to be on the top of your list of places to take your kids. That's why it's at the top of ours! The Neuschwanstein Castle (try saying that five times fast!) is one of the most popular castles in all of Europe, attracting 1.4 million visitors per year. It's set in the most idyllic location you can imagine, surrounded by the picturesque mountains of Bavaria.

In fact, this castle created by the "Fairytale King" was used as the basis for Cinderella's Castle at Disney World. Your kids are going to absolutely love roaming the halls of this magical old castle and imagining themselves in the fancy shoes of princes and princesses.

You and your children can either walk up a hill to the castle or indulge in the fairytale atmosphere fully by taking a horse-drawn carriage.

2. The City Your Kids Won't Want to Leave: Berlin

berlin

Even though it has a reputation for being a city of 24/7 partying and coffee shop hipsters, Berlin is also a really child-friendly city. There is so much going on in the German capital that every member of the family can find something exciting to do. As such, it needs to be on your list of the top places to visit in Germany for kids.

One of the first things you can do with your kids is have a picnic on Tempelhofer Feld, which used to be a large airfield. Berlin is absolutely fantastic in the summer, so you can take a bike ride around the park or just sit and soak up the German sun.

To give your kids a bit of a history lesson, you can take them to see remnants of the Berlin Wall that are still standing. As you know, the wall used to divide East and West Berlin, with the East controlled by Russia and the West controlled by American and Western European forces. There is beautiful street art painted on both sides to take in as you stroll along this landmark.

If you want to continue your adventure outside, you can head out of the city with the kids for a day to hang out at one of the many lakes around Berlin. Just choose one, bring your swimsuits, and enjoy your time together.

Top tip: To make the most of the city, buy your Berlin WelcomeCard online in advance. Valid for the duration of your choice from 48 hours to 6 days, it allows you to ride public transport in the ABC zones, offers discounts of up to 50% from over 200 partners, and comes with a handy pocket travel guide.

3. Fit In Some Learning with a Factory Tour

Next up is a chance to fit in a learning experience for your kids while they're in Germany. One of the things that Germans are famous for is building things, and man, do they build a lot! In fact, Germany is the largest economy in all of Europe and the fifth-largest in the whole world. And they have their huge number of vehicle, machinery, and chemical factories to thank for that.

To give your kids a glimpse into the inner workings of the German economy, you can take them on one of many factory tours. If you're in Munich, your best bet is the BMW Car Factory Munich, which offers fantastic tours and is in walking distance of the BMW Museum.

Also in Munich, you can head over to the Erdinger Brewery Munich to get an inside look at the world's largest brewer of wheat beer. Over in the west of Germany, the kids will be sure to enjoy the Haribo Gummy Factory in Bonn. You can't get into the factory itself, but there's a fantastic store and exhibition close to it.

4. Feed Their Imagination on the Fairy Tale Road

What do Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White have in common? They are both set in Germany! And you can actually live out those fairy tales on the German Fairy Tale Road. Trust us, your kids are going to love you so much for taking them on this magical adventure.

The German Fairy Tale Road spans about 370 miles (6oo km) from Frankfurt to Bremen. It will take you through all of the major cities where the Brothers Grimm found the inspiration for their stories. This includes the centuries-old castle where Sleeping Beauty took a very long nap and the forest where Little Red Riding Hood skipped over to grandma's house.

5. Visit the Oldest Science and Tech Museum in the World

If you want to stimulate your kids' thinking and enhance their understanding of the world, you should stop at the Deutsches Museum (German Museum) in Munich on your trip through some of the best places to visit in Germany for kids. This is one of the oldest and largest tech and science museums in the whole world, which makes it an absolute must-visit. It was founded in 1903 and brings in around 1.3 million visitors annually.

While you go check out the adult exhibits, your kids will have plenty to do, with tons of interactive exhibits on offer. There are hundreds of different activities for them to enjoy, from playing on a giant guitar to sitting behind a real car and imagining themselves driving off at the speed of light.

6. Have the Time of Your Life at Germany's Top Theme Park

If you've never been to Europe, you've probably never heard of Europa-Park - and that's definitely a shame. This incredible theme park is the largest in Germany and the second-most popular in all of Europe.

Located in Rust, it offers about 13 different roller coasters to choose from. There are bigger coasters for the more daring kids, as well as some more relaxed, children-friendly ones. Similarly to Disney World, the park is divided into different areas recreating different countries around the world. What kid wouldn't want to spend time at this theme park on their holiday in Germany?!
